Basaltic Rock

Overview
Bookmark

The Bunbury Basalt Rock, at the northern end of Ocean Beach, is formed from a volcanic lava flow believed to have occurred 150 million years ago in the Crataceous Period.

Volcanic activity was quite extensive over the south west corner for a short period of time. Basalt rock is believed to erode and decompose over a long period of time, however a considerable amount of basalt can still be found from Bunbury to windy harbour, buried beneath sedimentary layers of sand and clay. The basalt rock formation can only be seen in Bunbury and Black Point, south east of Augusta.
