Originally a chilled out surfie town, Margaret River has evolved into the ultimate getaway for good food, fine wine and spectacular scenery – just 3 ½ hrs drive south of Perth.

Massive surf has long been a major draw for the area and watching the local surfers take on the ocean is a spectacular sight; but the area is now synonymous with fine food and wine.

With around 100 wineries to choose from, you won’t be stuck for choice. There are even chocolate, fudge and ice-cream factories with free tastings. But don’t let all that indulgence weigh you down – get set for some adventure.

Renowned as one of Western Australia’s most popular destinations, the area is abundant in natural attractions including underground crystal caves (open for public tours), pristine white beaches, pockets of beautiful forest and a multitude of bush and coastal walk trails.

The rugged coastline is an example of nature at its finest and ocean views can be enjoyed from many lookouts. Be prepared for indulgence in gastronomic delights of world class wineries and the gourmet vineyard restaurants.

Teamed with a thriving arts scene – there’s just about an art or craft gallery on every corner – it’s the perfect place to soak up some West Australian culture. Accommodation-wise, there’s something for all budgets.

Things to do

Explore networks of underground caves, a rugged coastline, squeaky-clean sandy beaches, turquoise water, towering forests and bush and coastal walk trails. Watching the locals take on awe-inspiring waves at the world-class surf break, Surfer’s Point, is gripping stuff.
