The Pilbara Region of Western Australia is a wonderful mix of grand inland beauty and pristine coastal scenery. The deep red gorges of the Karijini National Park are some of the most spectacular in the world and are said to be over 2 billion years old, some featuring tropical oases, flowing waterfalls and well formed walking trails.
Driving through the Pilbara to take in the magnificent scenery is either on superb sealed highways, well-constructed dirt roads suitable for all vehicles, and tracks for four wheel drives. The destinations you ultimately choose for your touring will generally be determined by your vehicle type, the weather and road conditions at the time.
There are many road touring options in the region in both conventional and four wheel drive vehicles. The example below looks at touring from south to north and taking in the Karijini National Park.
Day 1 - Travelling along the North West Coastal Highway turn west at the Nanutarra Roadhouse towards Tom Price and the Karijini National Park. At Tom Price, a tour to the Hamersley Iron mining operation is well worth the effort. This section has all sealed roads.
Day 2 - Today offers a discovery adventure into the Karijini. Take your time to explore one of the adventure trails or swim in one the many gorges that make this National Park one of the most spectacular in the world. Handrail walk, Oxers Lookout and Ferns Pool highly recommended. Accommodation is available at either Tom Price or Newman. A further option to really experience the region is to camp at one of the designated camping sites. In this section, there are sealed access roads and dirt roads into gorge areas.
Day 3 - Heading east today you make your way towards the coast, once again through some spectacular scenery. Once back on the North West Coastal Highway you can either head north towards Port Hedland through beautiful Munjina Gorge, or south through Millstream-Chichester National Park to the centres of Karratha and Dampier, gateway to the Dampier Archipelago Islands. Road to Port Hedland - fully sealed. Road to Karratha well formed dirt road, currently being progressively sealed from the Karratha end. Free permit required - available from Tom Price Tourist Bureau.
