Just 132 kilometres north of Perth, or an easy two hour drive, lies one of Australia's most important heritage sites. Founded by Dom Rosendo Salvado in 1846, New Norcia is still home to a community of ten Benedictine monks.
The architecture, with its strong Spanish flavour, dominates the Australian bush setting. 27 buildings are classified by the National Trust and the town as a whole is registered on the National Estate. The buildings house richly decorated interiors, furnishings and post Renaissance art.
The best way to see New Norcia is to take a guided tour at 9.00am, 11.00am or 1.30pm daily. Guided tours provide a look behind closed doors not otherwise accessible to the public.
