Claremont is an area of almost five square kilometres and is nestled around Freshwater Bay on the Swan River, in the midst of beautiful parks with an abundance of mature trees. It is an attractive and sought after residential suburb, noted for its village atmosphere, shopping and entertainment precinct, educational establishment and facilities such as golf, swimming and yachting.

Claremont is a dynamic place, only a leisurely 10-minute drive south west of Perth CBD. Close to the acclaimed Cottesloe Beach, Claremont is an upmarket area with very stylish buildings, houses and people. There is a has a fun and active ambience.

Claremont is an attractive and sought after residential area that covers around 5 square kilometres on the riverbank. Predominantly, the luxury is surrounded by beautiful parklands and an air of nature that most city suburbs lack.

Quality dining in Claremont ranges from cafe style to full restaurant service with a variety of international specialty eateries. Up market retail particularly clothing and designer boutiques, home ware and designer gifts, jewellery, collectables, arts and crafts and bookshops.

Claremont is renowned for it’s fantastic shopping, sporting facilities like yachting, golf and swimming, educational institutions and of course the entertainment precinct. Resorts, hotels and bed and breakfasts provide accommodation for visitors to Claremont.

  • The nearest airport is Perth, international and domestic. Buses are a popular mode of transport with the nearest bus top at Bay View Terrace.

History

  • Claremont was named for Clare Morrison, the wife of a major property investor in the area. James Morrison persuaded the government to choose that name rather than the more prosaic sounding Butler's Swamp. Claremont was also the name of one of Queen Victora's palaces.
  • The Claremont Museum was originally known as Mrs Herbert's School which was built in 1860. It served the Pensioner Guard Community as a school and place of worship and it was the first school between Perth and Fremantle. The school remained active until the opening of the State School in Bay View Terrace in 1892.

History

  • The Claremont area developed mainly due to increased traffic when the Fremantle Traffic Bridge was opened. Later the railway line from Perth to Fremantle was built through the area. Claremont Railway Station, built in 1881, is the oldest railway station surviving in Western Australia that is still intact.
  • Claremont District Road Board was formed in 1893 and the Town of Claremont was proclaimed on June 15, 1898. In 1998 the Town of Claremont celebrated its centenary with a series of special events. One of these was writing of the history of Claremont and the book is titled "CLAREMONT: A History" written by Geoffrey Bolton and Jenny Gregory and was published in 1999.
