While soft sandy dunes are a feature of the northern and southern stretches of the Wanneroo coast, the central area from Ocean Reef to Quinns Rocks projects a hazardous beauty.
Limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops follow the shoreline for much of this distance, haunting reminders of the merciless offshore reef, which extends along the entire coastline.
The reef has claimed many a proud victim, the Alkimos wreck is one of the most famous. The Alkimos is one of the international fleet of ships, which came but never left. A former liberty ship, she now lies off Eglington Rocks on the southern boundary of Yanchep Sun City.
It seems the vessel was jinxed from the start and had many minor accidents and ownership changes, mysterious fires started and many ghostly sightings have been reported.
Further Information
The ship is said to be haunted by an old seaman, dressed in oilskins, who patrols the decks of the old vessel successfully repelling all attempts to fully salvage the wreck.
