Overview

Mundaring, a short 35 minute drive from the City of Perth. It was here, long ago, that Moondyne Joe, the bushranger, roamed among the tall jarrah trees and scaled the rocky outcrops of what is now John Forrest National Park on the side of Greenmount Hill.

Mundaring is home to the amazing engineering feat of the Mundaring Weir, and the start of the Golden Pipeline to Kalgoorlie/Boulder. In summer the outdoor cinema runs fabulous movies under the stars. Wildlife abounds, beautiful birds and wildlfowers can be found right through the Shire.

In The Heart of the Hills, cyclists and walkers can enjoy the heritage trails that run through small picturesque villages including Darlington, Glen Forrest, Parkerville and Chidlow. Horseriding, canoeing and a round of golf can also be enjoyed.

Hotels, farm and homestay properties, as well as cottage accommodation offer overnight or longer term bed & breakfast facilities. Guests may choose to sample fine wines at local wineries or enjoy a meal at one of the many excellent restaurants throughout the Hills. A pastime much enjoyed by many visitors is to browse through the craft shops or pay a visit to one of the galleries and studios exhibiting local fine art.

Magnificent gardens are open to the public in Spring and Autumn. Cultural, orchestral and pop concerts held in a unique bushland setting, are a feature of Summer evenings.

In Spring the bush is a riot of colour, as nature shows off her unique native flora including kangaroo paws, spider orchids, leschenaultia and hovea. Visitors may enjoy an early morning walk as the mists rise in the treetops and the joyful laughter of the kookaburra heralds a new day. These are the sights and sounds of the bush which "feeds the souls" of local artists, authors and artisians.

Further Information

Water, the life-blood of our inland farms, mines and towns, is pumped hundreds of kilometres to Kalgoorlie from the pristine beauty of the Mundaring Weir, lying in the peaceful Helena River Valley. Following wet winters, the spectacle of the Mundaring Weir overflowing becomes a magnet to sightseers and residents alike. The community is warm, friendly, multicultural and welcoming, enriched by the traditions of past generations and bygone days.
