The first vines in the Perth Hills Wine Region were planted in the 1880's. Back then, the region was predominantly used for orchards. It wasn't until the seventies and eighties did the regions viticulture taken off. The region is now littered with numerous boutique wineries and vineyards. Most of these wineries are centred on the township of Mundaring.
This region is nestled in the Darling Range with a close proximity to Perth. The region has an elevation of 100 to 400 metres. The climate is Mediterranean with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The valleys are the main places where the vines are grown. These valley experience frosts in the winter months. The valleys have a cover of alluvial soils that are ample for vine growth. Some vines are also grown in the gravelly soils of the slopes.
The Perth Hills wine region is a perfect getaway from the summer heat in the city. There are many cellar doors, charming restaurants and fantastic views of the ranges. The delights of this region can all be experienced by taking the enchanting Bickley Wine Trail.
