The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail was first dreamed up in 1895, when the first plans for the pipeline were drafted for an engineering feat to take the world by storm, to pump water Uphill some 500km, from the hills near Perth to the goldfields of Coolgardie.

Before construction began, the dream had become bigger. The pipeline was extended for water to be pumped even further east, to the new goldfields of Kalgoorlie. This Dream became a reality in January of 1903, when the water, which began its journey at Mundaring Weir, flowed into the Mt. Charlotte Reservoir at Kalgoorlie.

  • Today, water is being supplied to over 100, 000 people and 6 million sheep, in an area covering 44, 000 square km. Today's well signposted trail contrasts sharply with the track thousands followed to Australia's richest goldfields. You can travel along parts of the old Goldfields road, where many trudged, everyday, and there are pumping stations all along the way, as well as a dams and wells, illustrated panels, gold mining towns and natural attractions.
