Touring Perth by Bike 

Excellent opportunities for leisure cycling now exist along the banks of the Swan River and in Kings Park right in the centre of Perth. An increasing number of dual-use (pedestrian-cycle) paths are continually being built to make cycling the safe and relaxing form of sport and transportation it should be.

The river can be crossecd via the Narrows or Causeway, the two bridges that define the Perth water area. Bikes are transported free of charge on ferries. Cyclists living within the inner city suburbs or along the river can quickly link up with an extensive network of cycle paths. Those who live further afield can transport their bikes by trailer or bike carrier and park at one of the many car parks. Or, for added convenience, bikes can be hired at locations in Kings Park and along the river.

Most of Perth water and Kings Park riding is on dual-use paths where you should keep left whenever possible and remember that pedestrians have priority at roads, make sure it is safe to cross before leaving the path. Obey all road rules and for your own protection, wear a safety helmet at all times.

The Narrows interchange is an unusual combination of transport infrastructure and landscaped parkland. Its primary role as a motor vehicle facility has been augmented by a number of pathways, providing access to the lakes and other features, as well as a route to and from the city for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Further Information

Perth water, between the Causeway and the Narrows Bridge, provides a level, leisurely ride, (approximattely nine and a half kilometres) through riverside parkland. On this ride, cycling can be combined with a swim in the river, surfcat sailing or watching the windsurfers from Mill Point.

• Access from Perth water to Kings Park by bike is easiest via the dual-use path next to Mounts Bay Road to Hackett Drive (three kilometres) and through to the underpass at Winthrop Avenue.
• The bridge over Mounts Bay Road from the Narrows interchange provides access by foot only. Malcolm Street and Mount Street are both very steep.

Kings Park provides a unique four-hundred hectares of unspoiled parkland, beautiful at all times of the year, but magnificent during the spring wildflower season. For protection of the park and the comfort of other park users, please cycle only on the roads or designated dual-use paths. In other areas, including special nature trails and the botanic gardens, dismount and push your bike.

• A network of paths at Hale Oval offers an ideal opportunity for young children to get some supervised cycling practice.
