Mount Barker serves a wide agricultural area and is the administrative centre for the Shire of Plantagenet. Just 45 minutes north west of Albany, it is great for exploring the rugged southwest. Previously noted for apples, the emphasis is now on sheep, cattle, wildflowers and wine.
Mount Barker is an ideal holiday centre with ample shopping and recreation facilities within easy reach of the spectacular southern coastline, Albany, Denmark, the Stirling Ranges and Porongurup Ranges.
Situated on top of Mount Barker Hill, the Mount Barker Hill Lookout is easily pinpointed because of the 168 metre high television tower. Tallest free standing tower in the southern hemisphere. It is well worth the 5 kilometres drive as it gives panoramic views of the area. The sealed road is signposted from the southern part of Lowood Road.
Mount Barker is situated in the centre of the Great Southern Wine Region. The Great Southern has become a major wine producing area, since the first vine was planted back in 1967. All major grape varieties are grown and Mount Barker is a great base to tour the wine cellars, which are open to the public for tastings.
