Opened in 1998, the award-winning Bibbulmun Track is one of the world's great long-distance walk trails stretching nearly 1000 kilometres from Perth Hills to Albany on the south coast.

Signposted with yellow triangular markers symbolising the 'waugal' (rainbow serpent of the Aboriginal Dreamtime), the Track takes walkers through towering karri and tingle forests, down mist-shrowded valleys, over giant granite boulders and along breathtaking coastal heathlands.

Although the Track is well marked, walkers are strongly advised to use the eight coloured maps and two compact and informative guide books (Northern and Southern).

The Bibbulmun Track caters for everyone and every experience, from a gentle stroll to an epic eight week adventure. You can make it a wilderness experience by camping out, you can join a guided group, or you can do it in comfort using the varied accommodation in the towns along the Track.

The Independant Way

Self-guided walking and camping with a full backpack is a satisfying (and free!) way to experience the Track. The Friends of the Bibbulmun Track offer a free one hour trip planning service for members and a regular newsletter packed with useful tips (membership from AUD$20.00 per annum). The Friends also offer equipment hire (tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, stoves and an 'epirb' safety device) and run information nights and courses such as camp cooking and navigation.

Track facilities include 48 bush walker campsites each with a sleeping shelter, pit toilet, rainwater tank, discreet tent areas and picnic table. Fire rings are also available outside fire risk areas/times.

  • Anyone planning their own walk should visit the web site for a link to the latest Track conditions.
Easy Day Walks

'On the Trail of the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo' are a series of self-guided walk kits in protective map holders for various locations along the Track. Whilst walking you can look out for one of Western Australia's most spectacular birds and help scientists to ensure its long term protection. Kits include day walk itineraries ('out and back', or 'one way' using local transport providers), map, cockatoo brochure, colour postcard and bird sighting report card. The kits are available from The Friends of the Bibbulmun Track and tourist outlets.

Comfort & Convenience

Bibbulmun walking Breaks are pack-free, self-guided walking and accommodation packages which include a choice of accommodation (from budget to luxury), all food, transfers to the start of each walk, map and walk notes for a range of day walk options. Packages can be tailor-made for a weekend getaway or a holiday of up to three weeks in a number of locations along the Track.

In addition, the recently published 'Bibbulmun Track Accommodation, Tours and Services Guide' provides all the information needed for 'Do It Yourself' Track holidays in the South West. It is jam-packed with a wide range of places to stay, food outlets, attractions, transport and tour ideas in the communities of Kalamunda, Mundaring, North Bannister, Dwellingup, Collie, Mumballup, Donnelly River, Pemberton, Northcliffe, Walpole, Denmark and Torbay.
