Great Southern Wine Region

The Great Southern Wine Region is the largest and most varied wine region in Australia. Purely due to it's immense expanse, this region produces such a wide range of wine styles, and is very important to the viticultural industry of Australia. The region runs along the south coast of Western Australia and inland to Mount Barker and Rocky Gully.

The main towns in this region are Albany, Denmark, Porongurup, Mount Barker and Rocky Gully. Also, most of these areas have a sub-region within their boundaries. Overall this region is fairly recent with its establishment taking place largely in the late 1950's to early 1960's. The region has accelerated from then onwards.

The climate is mainly Mediterranean and maritime, but largely changing between the many sub-regions that combined, make up the Great Southern wine region.

This region is worth while to experience with its stunning coastling, rich country and fascinating historical aspects.

Harvest time: Mid February to early April.
