Beautiful Denmark - spectacular coastal scenery, enchanting Karri forests, pristine white beaches, clear blue ocean waters, giant granite boulders and majestic limestone headlands; meandering perennial streams and protected, fish-rich inlets skirted with an artists' paradise of paperbarks, rocks and bays...a choice of challenging or gentle coastal and forest walks, and intimate nooks and picnic spots. A wealth of precious wildflowers and delightful fauna - chuditch, woylie, ringtails and brushtails possums, honey and pygmy possums and the ubiquitous Western grey kangaroo; dozens of bird species of the coast, forest and inlet; whales and dolphins... and above it all the glorious sparkling southern night sky, away from the murky atmosphere and the dispersed artificial light of cities.
The village of Denmark is hidden amongst the forest and rolling hills of southern WA. There is a plethora of things to do and see including art galleries, animal touch farms, horse riding, craft shops, antique shops, restaurants and cafes. Many artists have been drawn to Denmark for it's tranquil, unspoilt and inspirational aspects. Along the beautiful Scotsdale Tourist Drive, many art studios can be found where gifts and reminders can be purchased.
Then of course there are the beautiful and enchanting natural attractions for which the area is famous, including the towering Karri forests, rolling green hills, the beautiful William Bay National Park with some of the best beaches in Australia, the dramatic coastline, and the inspiring Valley of the Giants tree top walk. Welcome to Denmark, in the heart of the Great Southern. Denmark is located in the central area of the south coast of Western Australia.
History - Though Aboriginal tribes inhabited the area for perhaps 40 000 years calling it Koorabup, meaning 'Place of the Black Swan'. Europeans first visited in 1829, three years after Albany was established as Western Australia's first European settlement. Thomas Wilson, the first white man to explore the region, named the river after a friend, naval surgeon Dr Alexander Denmark. The township took the same name when it was established in 1895. Denmark became a timber town, but now has become a beef cattle and tourism dependent town.
