Mount Augustus, or Burringurrah as it is known in local Aboriginal, rises majestically 750 metres above the dusty plains. The rock is eight kilometres long and covers an area of 4795 hectares - twice the size of Uluru. Interesting rock formations, caves and aboriginal art are found on many parts of the rock that have remained untouched for thousands of years. The area also boasts an abundance of wildflowers, bird and wildlife.

Check out Mundee - a rock wall with engravings of kangaroo, emu and bustard tracks in three cave like overhangs. From here you can take the Petroglyph Trail, an easy 300 metres return walk.

If you are an experienced bushwalker you can walk along the Summit Trail, a 12 kilometre walk that takes six hours return. From the summit there are extensive views over the surrounding plain and drainage basin to distant ranges.

There are a variety of other short walks that take in the fantastic surrounds.

Things to do

  • Cattle Pool on the Lyons River is a lovely area for fishing, swimming, canoeing or picnicking
  • Do the scenic Burringurrah drive, a 49 km circuit providing views of the changing rock faces
  • Take spectacular photos from Emu Hill Lookout
  • Walk along the Corella Trail beginning at Goolinee Pool on Lyons River. This is a 2km return walk taking 1 hour
  • Take a picnic at Warrarla Gum Grove. The Kotke Gorge Trail is a 2 km 1 hour walk
  • View Aboriginal engravings at Ooramboo
  • Edney's Trail is a 6 km walk taking 2.5 hours
  • Walk the Saddle Trail, a 2 km walk taking 1 hour
  • Crawl under the rock at Beedoboonda to observe Aboriginal engravings. After heavy rain, water cascades over the rocks forming several waterfalls
  • The Cave Hill Trail is a 4 km walk taking 2 hours

Please Note

  • No camping or open fires are permitted within the National Park
  • Goolinne Pool is a day use area only and reeds in the pool can make swimming hazardous
  • Do not enter the caves as the cave ceilings can be unstable and rock falls do occur
  • Always take fresh water and warm clothing on long walks
