Located east of Perth, Kalgoorlie-Boulder is one of the most important mining areas in the world. Travel to the region by coach, train, plane or car. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a place like no other - a wild and heady past and today, a busy bustling city. Recommend a stay of at least three days.
The main commercial centre of the Goldfields Region is Kalgoorlie-Boulder. It once had eight breweries and 93 hotels servicing 30,000 residents which is a good indication of the roaring successes that resulted from prospecting.
Its majestic wide streets remain and many of the old hotels look just as they did in yesteryear having been carefully restored to their former glory. Walk along these streets and you step back in time... it's a museum in itself.
Today, on the City's doorstep is Australia's biggest open cut mine, the Super Pit which is more 260 metres (852 feet) deep, 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) wide and 4 kilometres (2.4 miles) long.
