The town is thought to have been named after the Wyalkatchem Tank which was built by sandalwood cutters in 1881.
In 1904 JH Riches and J Lindsay were the first settlers to take up land in the area. Wheat was under crop as early as 1907 and the townsite of Wyalktachem was declared in 1908.
The town has a modern hospital and a caravan park which has camping facilities and is located just 500 metres south of the post office.
