In the heart of this rich wheat producing area is a gravity-defying feature that appears like a moment frozen in time... Wave Rock. The township of Hyden was established in the 1920's when the first farming blocks were allocated for agricultural development. It is regarded as a secure grain and wheat growing area with a rainfall of approximately 350mm per year.

The town is a modern shopping area catering for the needs of the locals and tourists. Sport plays a large part of the local scene with football, bowls, golf, tennis, hockey, cricket, netball and basketball being the main sports played.

With Wave Rock being the main attraction here is also equally interesting features in the area, such as Hippo's Yawn, Breakers, Town Dam, The Humps and Mulkas Cave. The Wildflower Shop has a varied display of dried wildflowers representing some of the 2500 varieties found in the area. To cater for the needs of visitors a country kitchen is open for morning and afternoon teas and also lunches, catering for up to 120 people. Other attractions - Wildlife Park (special features being the white kangaroos and Koalas), The Lace Place (Australias largest collection of lace on public display), Pioneer Town Museum (memories of yesteryear).
