Steep Point

Overview
Bookmark

Steep Point is a popular fishing area. It is apart of Carrarang Station and salt mining country. Here you can see the magnificent Zuytdorp Cliffs, which rise to some 170 metres above sea level. when venturing into Steep Point, visitors should carry their own drinking water. Clough Engineering Group has a full time ranger at Steep Point. He will collect visitor entry fees for per day and per adult. These fees will be collected from visitors as he finds them during his daily rounds of the popular camping sites.

Over the past several years many popular locations have been desecrated and random adjoining tracks have had a damaging effect on existing vegetation. We continue to allow tourists to visit our property on the basis that they contribute towards the cost of a management program and are responsible visitors. They reserve the right to restrict access to anyone on the property we deem to be of undesirable character.

Visitors will be welcomed to holiday at most popular locations on the property but will be subject to the control and the direction of the ranger. All litter must either be disposed of in bins or collected in rubbish bags and deposited at designated tip sites as specified by the ranger. The ranger has been appointed by the Shark Bay Shire as a litter inspector able to give "on the spot" fines for litterers.

The ranger has been appointed by the department of fisheries as an honorary fisheries inspector able to report and fine visitors for illegal fishing activities. He will specifically watch for illegal crayfish, undersize snapper and exceeded bag limits. We must endeavour to preserve the areas' fishing potential for future generations. The continual upgrading and construction of one good track to popular tourist locations is being done to prevent the need for side-tracking around difficult hills. Some areas will be barred from vehicle access to allow the revegetation of the maze of tracks which have recently come into existence.

Tracks have been sign-posted to popular locations and there will be the designation of suitable camping areas. Campers will initially be required to take firewood from areas which have not been depleted. It may be necessary to eventually require campers to buy at cost firewood at the ranger's house to protect existing vegetation.

While the property offers a long coastline, there are only relatively few popular camping spots which have protection from southerly winds and access to good swimming and fishing waters. Areas away from these overcrowded camping spots such as boat camping spots on Bellefin Prong should continue to be freely available to campers.
