Esperance is one of those towns blessed with spectacular beaches, a perfect climate and a relaxed, laidback lifestyle. Located around 9hrs drive from Perth, this south coast haven is so relaxed even kangaroos sun bake on the beach.
The Esperance region contains national parks, including the very popular and spectacular Cape Le Grand National Park with its unbelievably beautiful beaches, islands, granite headlands, rugged coastal scenery and challenging walks.
A necklace of several hundred islands makes up the Recherche Archipelago, which adorns the coast of this beautiful region. Consequently, Esperance is also known as The Bay of Isles.
There are many activities for visitors to enjoy, no matter what your interests - including 4WD safaris, beach safaris, coach tours, aerial sightseeing, island cruises, fishing and diving.
Be sure to check out the museum, arts centre, art galleries and boutique aquarium with touch pool for kids.
If snorkelling appeals, locals say the lagoon to the east of West Beach is good, as are Blue Haven Beach and Twilight Cove. If you want a go at fishing, throw in a line at Tanker Jetty. Watch out for cheeky local Sammy the seal!
Great for camping, fishing and bush walking, one of the best spots there is Lucky Bay. The campsite has solar hot showers, camp kitchens and BBQs and bush walks with excellent coastal views.
Back in town there is an excellent variety of hotels, motels, apartments, bed and breakfasts and farm stays to choose from. For tent and safari hut camping, hop on a ferry to Woody Island.
Further Information
On July 11, 1979, Esperance was showered by sky debris from America's first space station, Skylab. A San Francisco newspaper paid 17-year-old Esperance local Stan Thornton $10,000 for delivering the first piece of Sky Lab to the paper's office – which he had collected from his roof.
