The Yarra Valley wine region is centred by the towns of Healesville, Yarra Glen, Coldstream and the historic township of Lilydale. These towns are the location of the majority of the regions wineries and vineyards. The regions climate is satisfactory with strong cold winds and frosts being a hindrance. Rainfall subsides just before the harvest time. This creates the need for some irrigation during that time.
The Plenty Ranges, Great Dividing Ranges and the Dandenongs border this picturesque region. Vineyards are found throughout the region at elevations of 50m to 400m above sea level. The soils range from a red volcanic soil in the north and a grey loam in the south.
