Visitors are often surprised that the rather beautiful village of Olinda is just a stone throw away from Melbourne. The highest of the Dandenong villages it is also handy to the Yarra Valley. With a small resident population of 1400 people, Olinda is surrprisngly over flowing with many art, antique and handicraft galleries.

Olinda has several of Victoria’s top gardens, the National Rhododendron Gardens and Pirianda gardens to name a few. Take time out to enjoy the stunning alpine views or indulge in some spectacular bushwalks, the crown of which is the Olinda Falls. The majestic Dandenong ranges, Olinda creek, Sherbrook Forest and the Dandenong National Park complete the tranquil atmosphere.

Things to do

  • Venture into any of the established gardens. National Rhododendron Gardens, William Ricketts Sanctuary, Cloudehill or Pirianda Gardens
  • Go walking through magnificent forest in the Dandenong Ranges National Park
  • See the RJ Hamer Arboretum
  • Trek to Olinda Falls
  • Buy at any of the roadside stalls selling preserves, produce, flowers, eggs and seasonal chestnuts
  • Look out for wildlife including emus, wombats, possums, echidna, lyrebirds, king parrots, and rosella
  • Play golf at the public golf course
  • Ride aboard the famous Puffing Billy steam train on a short journey through fern covered forest
  • Visit the nearby villages of Sassfras or Kalorama
  • Sample a local speciality, Devonshire tea
