Mount Dandenong is a beautiful rural community nestled between Olinda and Kalorama, in the lush Dandenong Ranges, 35km east of Melbourne CBD.
Originally known as Corhanwarrabul, which was a mouthful that many couldn’t spell, the mountain dominates the surrounding landscape. The Mount Dandenong Observatory, 633 metres above sea-level, commands impressive views and is home to the Sky High Restaurant, a cafe, and BBQ facilities.
Dandenong Ranges National Park, covering an area of 3215 hectares, is the principle attraction of the region. Visitors can enjoy numerous scenic tourist drives, as well as hiking trails to suit all levels. The park is a day visit area and camping is not permitted.
The William Ricketts Sanctuary is situated on the east face of Mount Dandenong. The unique tourist attraction features over 93 ceramic sculptures hidden within the eucalyptus forest.
Other attractions include parks, forests, an arboretum, and numerous lookouts. Light to moderate snow falls on Mount Dandenong a few times most years, usually between late winter and spring.
Further Information
Due to the area being the closest major mountain range to Melbourne, it is home to many of the city's TV and radio transmission towers, which soar into the sky out of the surrounding forests.
