Hopetoun is in the Mallee and is the main gateway to the Wyperfield National Park. The town was named after the seveth Earl of Hopetoun, first governor of Australia, and is surrounded by grassy plains and rolling sand hills.

The town is right on Yarriambiac Creek, near Lake Corrong, and is located on the Henty Highway, 406 km north-west of Melbourne.

Hopetoun has hotel/motel and caravan park accommodation available.
