Overview

Major Thomas Mitchell named Mt Sturgeon and Mt Abrupt when he camped in the area in 1836.

Settlement came soon after, following his glowing reports of the region. Although originally called Mt Sturgeon, nostalgic Scottish settlers renamed the town after a town in Scotland. The impressive setting of the town has inspired many early Australian painters and images can be found throughout regional galleries in Victoria.

  • The Dunkeld Arboretum contains the second largest collection of oak trees in Australia. Dunkeld is the acknowledged southern gateway to the Grampians National Park. Well-defined walking tracks lead to the two peaks, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Other walks include a town historic walk and through the bushland surrounding the town.
