Royal Park covers 170 hectares in the heart of the city, and is a popular place for recreation and relaxation. The park features established walking or cycling routes, grasslands and woodlands, native bushland and an abundance of eucalyptus and casuarina trees. It also includes a new native wetland habitat which acts as a natural filter for the area's stormwater system, delivering cleaned, reclaimed water to reticulate the Royal Park Golf Course and sports ovals in the northern area of the Park.
The Melbourne Zoo calls the Royal Park home as well as three tennis clubs, the Royal Park Public Golf Club, the State Hockey and Netball Centre, twelve sports grounds for soccer, cricket, lacrosse and football, Walmsley House - one of the oldest buildings in Victoria, Australian Native Garden in the southern area of the park and Trin Warren Tam-boore - a recycling wetland.
