In the 19th century, Melbourne's wealthiest residents escaped the summer heat to Mount Macedon, building impressive mansions and creating some of Victoria's finest gardens. The area boasts many gardens, which are open to the public at certain times of the year and some very beautiful reserves and parks.

Macedon National Park protects forested land along the ridge of the Macedon Ranges. The park offers visitors panoramic views, scenic drives, picnic facilities, walking trails, horse riding opportunities, cultural and historic sites of interest and a diversity of flora and fauna, all within an hour's drive from Melbourne.

The gardens and homes of Mount Macedon, with the mountain's fertile volcanic soils, high rainfall and cool climate, are a little slice of England, right here in Australia.

Enjoy a Devonshire tea in the town of Macedon. Many restaurants can also be found and there is a large pub that has croquet lawns in the back beer garden.
