The historic goldrush town of Kyneton is one of Victoria's oldest 'working' towns. After the days of the gold rush in the 1850-60's the town established a reputation as a retreat and prospered as a supplier of food, clothes and other necessities for travellers passing through.
Kyneton is a town of unique character and gentle ambience, whose people extend a warm welcome to all who come and visit, or stay. It is a centre from which to explore the beautiful countryside and discover all sorts of treasures and reminders from our very early days.
The town boasts one of the most amazing collections of Victoriana and vintage farm machinery from the towns past in our local Museum, housed in an early Bank of NSW, reputedly the oldest surviving bank building in the state. Parts have been decked out in period style and you can also visit Theaden Homestead (c.1840).
Often referred to as the "prettiest" country racecourse in Victoria and also one of the oldest, Kyneton District Racing Club has excellent facilities, surrounded by picturesque landscape and the track is lined with beautiful established elm trees. Honoured to receive the 1999 and 2001 Country Racecourse of the Year Award, The Club has always been associated with a high standard of thoroughbred racing.
