Taggerty is a small town and farming district in the Acheron Valley on the Maroondah Highway. The Cathedral Range overlooks Taggerty from the south. A pastoral run called Taggerty Run was established in 1846.
Gold was discovered along the Acheron River in 1870, which lead to the establishment of two settlements, named Acheron Lower and Acheron Upper; later named Taggerty to avoid confusion.
