On the banks of the Ovens River, tucked in at the foot of the Ovens Valley, the former gold-mining town of Harrietville can be found.

Traditionally known as a ski mecca, Harrietville has become an all seasons getaway. Swim the local rivers and water holes, bushwalk in the Alpine National Park, explore the old gold mine trails of the past or walk the high country cattle trails. Harrietville is also the ideal base for more adrenaline pumping activities. Try mountain bike riding, high country hiking, 4X4 driving or cross country or alpine skiing. The village is just a short drive from Mount Hotham which is a major alpine resort offering excellent skiing.

Winter aside, Harrietville is very attractive in autumn when blazing tree top canopies create a spectacular display. The small commercial centre includes a general store, two hotels, and a selection of accommodation.

Things to do

  • Mountain Fresh Trout and Salmon Farm Located just off the Great Alpine Road, offers the opportunity to take a stroll through the 23 fish breeding ponds set on 19 acres of peace and quiet
  • Take a peek at Pioneer Park which features a museum and displays of the region's history
  • Advice on gold panning technique and suitable locations for alluvial panning are available for those interested
  • Trek. The Bon Accord Spur track to Mount Hotham begins at Harrietville. There is also the Bungalow Spur Track to Mt Feathertop - at 1922 m the second-highest peak in the state
  • Ski of course! Mount Hotham offers excellent skiing and facilities
