Cassilis and Tongio West are about halfway between Swifts Creek and Omeo on this alternative route to the Great Alpine Road.
Although neither is any longer a town they are points of strong historical importance as the Cassilis field was one of the richest gold producers in the region. The Mt Markey Winery now stands on the site of the old Cassilis Hotel with a number of points of interest in the vicinity. "Long Gully" begins at Swifts Creek with Brookville Valley running off it about 3kms out of Swifts Creek.
Tongio West is about 10 km out and Cassilis about 13 km. From Swifts Creek to the top of the "Cassilis Gap" at the junction with the Mt Delusion road is about 17 km with Omeo another 13kms. This is the much the same distance as the highway from Swifts Ck to Omeo and travelling both routes makes an interesting round trip from Omeo.
