Portarlington is located on a hillside at the tip of the Bellarine Peninsula overlooking Port Phillip Bay. It is a quiet residential town which turns rapidly into a popular resort town during holiday time due to its picturesque outlook and great camping ground.
The Wathaurong Aborigines originally inhabited the area. Evidence of their past is visible as you stroll along the foreshore by the Fairfax Street boat ramp. Aboriginal shell middens remain firmly imbedded in the cliff face.
Fishing is also important to the seaside town of Portarlington. The area is well known for its mussel farming. You will always see a number of fishing vessels tied up at the pier and on weekends fresh mussels are sold.
