The main vineyards and wineries in the Swan Hill wine region lie along the Victorian side of the Murray Valley Highway. This region is home to some important wine companies, mainly the two largest are significant to the regions survival, annually crushing the majority (over 23,000 tonnes) of grapes between them. The region also has many smaller boutique wineries that offer a diverse range of wines and usually cellar doors. Most of the cellar doors found in the region are based along the Golden Mile Wine Trail. Many cellar doors offer lunches and a chance to bask on the shores of the Murray. The trail runs along the Murray River from Beverford in the south to Goodnight in the north.
The region is subject to a Mediterranean climate with little rainfall and high temperatures. Consequently, the region is totally dependent on the Murray River for irrigation purposes.
Grape Varieties:
Many of the boutique vineyards and wineries in the region are expanding production, introducing the Italian varieties of Durif and Sangiovese.
Other Varieties produced here include: Cabernet, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling
