Barmah State Forest and Barmah State Park are situated on the Murray River, and together they form the largest river red gum forest in Victoria.
The area could equally be called a wetland since much of it is frequently flooded. Barmah State Park & State Forest are located between the towns of Barmah and Strathmerton, about 225km north of Melbourne.
Flora & Fauna - the varied environment provides a range of conditions for 219 species of birds as well as reptiles and animals, the platypus can sometimes be spotted in quiet backwaters. The forest is on a major flightpath for migratory birds as well as being an internationally significant wetlands breeding ground for waterbirds.
The oldest river red gums in Barmah Forest are 500 years old. They often grow 30 metres high, some reaching 45 metres. More than 80% of the forest is covered by these sturdy trees whose trunks develop a gnarled, rock-like appearance.
