Lake Mulwala and the Murray River is the habitat for a range of marine life. The Murray Cod, once abundant throughout the Murray-Darling river system, has been drastically reduced in numbers. They are protected during September, October & November - if caught, they must be returned. The largest recorded size for a Murray Cod was 1.83 metres and 113kg. Best bait - bardi grubs, yabbies, shrimps & scrubworms. Trout Cod are a protected species. Taking, including catch and release, is prohibited. They are found between Yarrawonga & Barmah Forest. Golden Perch (Yellowbelly) is an important native fish. It is considered rare in much of its original territory. Best bait - crayfish, shrimp, yabbies & scrubworms. Silver Perch - another endangered species. Can be caught in Lake Mulwala on catch & release. Best bait - shrimp or scrubworms. Murray Crayfish breed at the end of autumn. Crayfish with eggs or young are protected. Best bait - carp, liver or ox heart. May be taken from May to August.
