A good example of architecture formed during the gold rush period is the Market Building on Mostyn Street, completed in 1862 and used as a food market until 1967. Its prominent portico is presided over by a statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvests. Further along the track, visit the Morrell glass gallery.
Castlemaine's Botanical Gardens were laid out by Baron Von Mueller, who designed many of Victoria's public and private gardens - including Melbourne's Botanical Gardens. Take a picnic basket full of goodies and enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the lake, only 5ha in distance.
