Morwell 

Morwell is best known today as the centre of the states brown coal mining and electricity production industry. Coal was discovered in the Latrobe Valley in 1873, and mining began in Morwell in 1955. For 80 years, coal mining and electricity production has been a major source of employment for Morwell and surrounding towns. Visitors can tour the Powerworks Museum, the open-cut coalmines, and the power generation plants by day or night to discover the fascinating technical and social history associated with Morwell.

Two & a half acres of landscaped rose gardens mark Morwell's entrance, located in the heart of the Latrobe Valley. With 3000 bushes, more than 250 varieties, and 100 beds, the Morwell Centennial Rose Garden is one of the finest in the southern hemisphere, open all year.

Morwell is home to the Latrobe Regional Gallery. The gallery’s permanent collection is broadly concentrated on contemporary Australian Art, Post 1970’s. It also holds a number of works on paper of historical significance to the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland Region, specifically Jessie Trail’s, Ethel Spowers and Evelyne Syme images of the Yallourn Power Station and Ann Montgomery’s Poowong Hills.

Just 16 kilometres south, in the foothills of the Strzelecki ranges, the Morwell National Park attracts nature lovers and provides a vast habitat for native flora and fauna. The park contains 283 hectares of ridges, many walking tracks, and picturesque picnic spots.
