Cradle Mountain is located in the northern part of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park. The region is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. With a view across Dove Lake to Cradle Mountain, it is no wonder it is a highlight. The mountain itself is a jagged, dolerite peak that dominates the area. This dramatic vista can be seen on foot as you walk along the shores of Dove Lake.
Cradle Mountain was named in 1827 by the explorer Joseph Fossey who decided it resembled a similarity to a cradle. It was first climbed in 1831 when the explorer Henry Hellyer successfully reached the summit.
The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain epitomise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heath lands with button grass and stands of deciduous beech (wonderfully colourful in autumn), provide a range of environments to explore. The comings and goings of wallabies and wombats in the late afternoon near Waldheim and the changing colours of the flowers and leaves by the side of Lake Dove can all add new dimensions to your visit.
Icy streams cascade down the mountain, and ancient pines are reflected in the glacial lakes. The track to the top of the mountain (1,545 metres above sea level) is an eight-hour return walk, but there are many other shorter, less challenging walks lower down, such as the walk around Dove Lake.
For visitor convenience, and to help protect the delicate natural environment, an optional shuttle service operates from the information centre to Dove Lake and other popular destinations within the park.
