Original Coles Store

The Original Coles Store is an historic shop at Wilmot, north-west Tasmania.

Operated by the Coles family from 1910-1921, the Original Coles Store was Australia’s first permanent Coles retail store, and the forebear of Australian retailing giant, the Coles-Myer chain.

The Original Coles Store has escaped development over the years and much of the building and fittings have been preserved. It now operates as the Wilmot village store.

Wilmot is located in Tasmania’s mountainous north-west. En route to the town you can take advantage of roadside lookouts to see Mount Roland and Lake Barrington, or take the 1.5 hour walk to the Forth Falls.

The 20-minute climb to the summit of Bell Mountain is steep but rewards you with uninterrupted, 360-degree views of surrounding mountains including Mount Roland, Mount Claude, Mount Vandyke, the Great Western Tiers, Cradle Mountain and Black Bluff.
