Winnaleah is a small friendly village close to the town of Derby, and 100km from Launceston. It is known for its rich red volcanic soils, which sustains vibrant dairy and cropping industries.
There are 2 convenience stores, a hotel, a post office, an online access centre, the district high school, a farm merchandise store, and a fuel service. Local attractions include a swimming pool and a memorial ANZAC bell. Trout fishing is also very popular here.
The gravel roads over much of this remote north east corner deter most of the tourists, but the slowness gives you a chance to spot the abundant wildlife, especially around Mt. William National Park. Wallabies, kangaroos, wombats and pademelons graze peacefully, but watch out for the silly ones that hop across in front of you!
