The little resort of Scamander is located just 18km from both St Helens and St Marys on the north-east coast of Tasmania. Because of its beautiful setting at the mouth of the Scamander River and its wide sandy beaches, it has become a popular holiday destination. Despite Scamander’s small population of 600 people it has a wealth of activities and facilities, including numerous bed and breakfasts and even a resort hotel. Bream fishing is renowned in this part of the world as well as beach and game fishing. Dolphins and whales have also been sighted offshore in migration season.

The town's most interesting historic feature is its infamous bridge or bridges. The Scamander River Bridge has been built, destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. It has collapsed under the weight of a mob of cattle, washed away several times by floods, destroyed by a tornado and even attacked by a ferocious borer which worked its way into the timber quickly destroying it. At one point the town was forced to rely on a punt to cross the river. In 1936 a concrete bridge was finally built which the town is hoping will last indefinitely.
