Nestled between the townships of Saint Marys and Campbell Town is the little township of Avoca. It has a population of 220 people, and is built on the convergence of the South Esk and Saint Pauls Rivers. Just 83km from Launceston It can be located via the Midland Highway.
In colonial times convict probation stations were established at Avoca, Fingal, St Marys and Falmouth. Despite the vast number of convicts, only farming and historical architecture remains.
There are a number of fine old buildings worth exploring in Avoca. The neo-Romanesque St Thomas's Church was built in 1843, the parish hall, the Rectory and Marlborough House, Union Hotel and Bona Vista, a superb stone residence with basement cells are also notable 19th C buildings.
