Established in 1804, George Town has a rich history and is one of the oldest towns in Australia. Only the cities of Sydney and Hobart are older. In fact John Batman sailed from George Town to settle Melbourne. Reminders of Australian history are visible in such buildings as The Grove and The Watchhouse.

More recently, the town was best known as the homeport for the High Speed Devil's Cat Catamaran service to Melbourne. Sadly the route was cancelled after just one season.

George Town is the gateway to a region that offers a terrific blend of history and natural experience, these include beautiful beaches, marvelous fishing spots, sports facilities & a nine hole golf course.

Things to do

  • Visit Low Head - this tiny settlement has a 12 m high lighthouse which overlooks the entrance to the River Tamar
  • See the Grove - this is one of George Town's main historic attractions. The Grove is an elegant old stone house built in around 1829
  • The old Watch House Museum was originally the local lockup for offenders and is a great place to explore. It also houses a craft and information centre

Getting There

  • George Town is 53 kms north of Launceston on the East Tamar Highway
