Cape Barren Island is geographically the second largest island of the Flinders Island group. 51 islands make up this group in the Bass Straight, located between Melbourne and Tasmania.
Cape Barren can be reached from Flinders Island by a short boat ride or by plane. At one side of the bay there is a jetty where the barge comes in once a month. This isolated island has very few visitors and some great opportunities for uninterrupted hiking in the hills or exploring the imposing fractured granite cliffs of Mt Munro. Aside from hiking Cape Barren is a popular destination for sea kayakers many of whom attempt the crossing of the Bass Strait.
The residents of Cape Barren Island consist of a fluctuating Aboriginal community of 70 people. Most of them are descended from a community of mixed European and Aboriginal descent. The community is based around 'The Corner' on the North Western coast. The Corner is a community complex with an office, meeting room, shop and post office. There is also an Anglican church, a hall, nursing centre and a school complex.
