Australia’s first rural municipality, Triabunna was established as a whaling station and garrison town servicing the Maria Island penal colony. Although the convict station is long gone it still remains the region’s major civic centre, with a permanent population of over 700 people. It encampasses the area from Buckland to Bicheno and also the Freycinet coastline. As well as being the major centre it is also a scenic port town with a thriving fishing industry. Local scallops, mussels and abalone are among the regions specialties.

The town is surrounded by inviting beaches, undulating hills and tracts of eucalypt forest. Swim, fish or sail in beautiful Spring Bay, a harbour tucked away at the southern end of Great Oyster Bay. Drift through kelp forests and over coral reefs or scuba dive on nearby Maria Island - also a haven for bushwalking, cycling and wildlife.

Triabunna is an Aboriginal word which means hen. This is derived from the fast-running, flightless hen found only in Tasmania. These birds are prevalent in this area and have been known to reach speeds of up to 50 kilometres.
