Richmond 

Georgian cottages and manors of mellow sandstone stand in pretty cottage gardens in this beautiful old town just half an hour’s drive from Hobart.

Nearly 800 people live here in cobbles, slate and handmade brick homes. Many of the residents are artists and craftspeople.

The colonial gaol built in 1825 is now a museum, thankfully peaceful after its unhappy, noisy past. Ducks on the Coal River swim to and fro under Australia's oldest bridge, built in 1823-25.

Galleries and boutiques sell a wide range of quality arts and crafts amid the multitude of quaint tearooms which serve Devonshire teas, old fashioned sweets and baked delights.
