Hobart

Overview
Bookmark

Hobart lies in the southeast, at the foot of Mount Wellington and near the mouth of the River Derwent. The historic Sullivans Cove, Salamanca and Battery Point are here, as well as St David’s Anglican Cathedral, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Parliament House and Government House.

Hobart is Australia's second oldest city, natural beauty and history add to the relaxed yet lively atmosphere encouraged by an array of festivals, bars, eateries and the city's busy harbour. Once the 19th century waterfront warehouses bustled with whalers, soldiers, petty bureaucrats and opportunists. Now there are cafes, restaurants and studios bustling with shoppers and visitors. Polished glass winks in the windows of cottages while brass doorknobs gleam in the porches of colonial edifices.

Square-riggers still grace the river, tacking among the yachts and fishing boats. Hobart Parliament House looks out on its lawns, once the market garden for old Hobart Town. Historic Government House sits serenely in its park, where the Governor’s cows graze as they always have in their city-centre paddock.

Things to do

  • Visit Tasmanian Transport Museum with its locomotives, diesel rail cars and trolley buses. Train rides run the 1st Sunday each month, the vintage steam locomotive runs on the 3rd Sunday of the month
  • Explore Risdon Cove. The first European settlement site in Tasmnania was handed back to the Tasmanian Aborigines in 1995
  • Visit the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, 13.5 hectares of exotic flora
  • Take a Cadbury Cruise up the Derwent River to the chocolate factory
  • Climb Mt Wellington, a 1 day round trip to the summit. An easier walk from the bus terminus at Fern Tree is 5 - 6 hours
  • Take a swim at Tattersalls Hobart Aquatic Centre
  • Discover nearby Port Arthur
  • Stroll in Battery Point, the historic centre of Hobart, a district of grand mansions, quaint mariners' cottages and boatyards
