Overview

Settlers from Norfolk Island established this town on the banks of the River Derwent in 1807. New Norfolk is situated On the A10, 20km north-west of Hobart.

Early townspeople planted hundreds of poplar trees, which in autumn turn bright gold.

  • The town is the centre of the hop-growing area of Tasmania and there are several old oast houses (kilns) left from the early days of hop-processing. The town has many old buildings, including one of Australia’s oldest inns, the Bush Inn, and if you are visiting New Norfolk, be sure to enjoy a moment of precious peace in our wonderful old St Matthews Church, the oldest church in Australia.

Special Features

  • Derwent Valley Railway - Operating a collection of steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock including periodic rail tours on the Tasmanian Railway Network. Also available for charter.
  • Old Colony Inn - Once a private home and a hotel and now a coffee and craft shop. It has beauty and charm . It was almost certainly built to cater for the coaches which started passing through the town in the mid 1830s.

Special Features

  • St Matthews Church - This is Australia’s eldest church. The Anglican Church of St Matthew in Bathurst Street was built in 1823. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the church are the extraordinary stained glass windows.
  • The Salmon Ponds - Located 11 km upstream from New Norfolk is the tiny settlement of Plenty the fishery is the first rainbow and brown trout farm in Australia having been in operation since 1864. The setting of the Salmon Ponds is quite extraordinary making it look more like a collection of backyard goldfish ponds than a commercial operation.
