Mt Mawson is located only and hour and half drive to the west of Hobart. Situated in the Mt Field National Park, Mt Mawson claims to have some of the steepest slopes in the country.
Mt Mawson is one of the lesser known resorts and is run by the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association. There are three rope tows servicing the slopes although visitors are warned not to dismiss Mt Mawson as a beginners run. There are very challenging areas that are great for the more experienced and adventurous.
The area mainly gains its popularity through the number of cross-country skiers to grace the slopes. Mt Mawson incorporates the fantastic runs to Mt Field west, Tarn Shelf and Rodway Range within the national park.
The ski slopes are at an altitude of approximately 1250m and the area usually gets reasonably reliable snow falls for cross country and enough during winter resulting sufficient cover for downhill skiing from mid July to mid September.
