Surveyed in 1861 and proclaimed the following year the town of Kadina derives its name from the corruption of the Aboriginal word meaning "lizard plain".

Like the other major towns in region, Kadina was established as a result of the discovery of copper. It is the largest town on the Yorke Peninsula and is now the commercial centre for the agriculturally rich surrounding districts.
